Causes of the Revolutionary War

In 1754, a British were at war with the French, Spanish, and Austrians. This war was called the French and Indian War or the Seven Years War. In the same year a twenty-one-year-old George Washington was sent to the Ohio country with 150 Virginia men. Washington ran into a group of French troop just outside of Fort Duquesne. There the first bullet of the war was shot and Washington came out victorious over the French troops. Although, Washington had won the battle, the French quickly retaliated and forced Washington to surrender Fort Necessity. In 1758, William Pitt was sent to try and do something in the war against the French. By the end of 1758, Pitt had dramatically turned the tables of the war. In September 1759, British and American forces attacked Quebec and fought for five days. The British took over control of Canada and in 1763 the Treaty of Paris was signed. This gave all territory east of the Mississippi to the British. In 1764, the Prime Minister George Greenville imposed the American Revenue Act, which was designed to raise revenues from the colonies. This was also called the Sugar Act because the major goal was the raising of tariff on sugar. The colonial protest from the Sugar Act forced the British to follow with the Quartering Act. This forced the colonists to provide housing and food for the British troops. Then in 1765, the Stamp Act was passed to impose taxes on all legal documents. The colonists started verbal protests against the taxes. The famous saying "No taxation without representation" was created to protest against the Stamp Act. The colonists formed the Stamp Act Congress and sent representatives to New York to talk about what to do about this tax. They came to the conclusion that they would not import any British goods until the Stamp Act was repealed. The Sons of Liberty was created in protest against the Stamp Act. This secret organization consisted of colonists that would talk about how to get rid of the Stamp Act.
