Lord of The Flies Essay

Someone once said that our character is not defined by how we act in times of joy, but by how we act in times of struggle. For the schoolboys in Lord of the Flies, each and every one of them was molded and shaped into a new person because of the hardships they had to endure while abandoned. Being 10 years old with no supervision seems almost a formula for catastrophe. Surprisingly though, the boys did create a society of some sort, however primitive, based not only on experience, but instinct as well. Therefore, because of human nature, the outcome was inevitable. .
The boys" previous life could in no way prepare them for the experiences on the island, but they did contribute a little. For instance, they knew the basics of a monarchy and how to create a society through distribution of power. They also knew basic life skills, like how to build a fire or search for food. They also knew how to defend themselves against the weather by building shelters. .
While life in Britain did influence the boys" new society, it also had negative effects on their new life. The children had been sheltered for the entirety of their lives. Everything had been provided for them and they had been protected against any evil. The boys had never had to kill, steal, or build. They have never had to hunt or protect. All of a sudden, all these things were necessary. Someone had to teach them and try to convince them that contrary to popular belief, they would not be done for them. In this case, the boys" previous way of life caused the adjustment period to be lengthier and more severely life-altering. .
I think that the boy's outcome was inevitable because their behavior was based solely on instinct. Their strong desire of survival dictated their behavior far more than their will to be proper. The boys naturally picked the strongest, bravest, most outspoken boys for their leaders. These boys have never contributed a word to England's government, so how could they possibly know what kind of leader to choose? Instinct, survival of the fittest reigns.
