            The use of metaphor is often apt in literary works to futher portray a meaning or idea. Crawford's The Dark Stag carries a metaphor thoughout the .
             entire poem. The Author uses this literary strategy to give the poem character and personification. Throughout the poem the author compares the following.
             things, using a continuous metaphor. The extended metaphor carried throughout the poem is a hunter, represented as the sun or dawn, his dark stag .
             representing dusk and the moon being represented by the doe.
             The representation of the hunter to the sun is conveyed through subtle references throughout the poem. For example, the author introduces the .
             hunter "behind a length of yellow light", or personifiying the sun. She then mentions the hunters arrow, illustrating the suns rays, she says, " the hunter's.
             arrow shines"(4). The author then illustrates the red in the sky or sunrise by stating the " his moccasins are stained with red" (5). In addition to the hunter.
             being compared to as the sun, the author also represents the hunter as a " red-eyed eagle (26)" , who sees his oppurtunity. As well as indirect references.
             to the sun, the author directly states the the Hunter is the sun, " to front the hunter, Sun." ( 32). The author takes the metaphor further by subtle illusions .
             to other forest hunters, the creatures awaken and call to the hunter, " their silver warriors plunge" (39). Which represents the world awakening as the sun .
             rises, or the hunter confronts the stag. The conclusion of the poem includes the victory of the hunter or of the sun as it defeats the stag or the dusk. The .
             victory is depicted by the the imagery put forth by the author, such as the " swifter the Sun's fierce arrows race" (53). As well as " his blood upon the crisp.
             blue burns, reddens the mounting spay.(58)". And finally with the triumph of the Hunter as the sun, " red glow the skies" ( 61).
             The author also illustrates a comparison between dusk and the dark stag.
