prison life. Studies have revealed, that the consequences .
of children being estranged from their mother and siblings .
at a young age is worrisome. These children are .
statistically more likely to become unlawful themselves. .
They endure endless emotional and social damage. It should .
also be mentioned, that the recidivism rate among the .
mothers whom participated in the program, is low. Can we .
provide evidence that allowing mothers to raise their .
children in prison with them, has a more beneficial result? .
Do we want to risk the outcome for research purposes?.
Life behind bars is renowned as being a place of dark .
dealings; consequently, "prisons do not provide an .
appropriate environment for babies and young children, .
often causing long-term developmental retardation".(Vis 1). .
The settings are restricted and children have little .
opportunity to relate with others, explore their .
surroundings, be stimulated, and therefore hinders their .
ability to develop normally. The risk that we may take in .
raising these children in prison, isn't just a .
developmental concern. For all intents and purposes, a .
maximum facility bounded by a towering fence .
and peaked with razor wire, is doomed to house dangerous .
inmates. The rationalization that this type of program will .
lower the recidivism rate does not reign over the security .
characteristics of prison life. The dangers lurking at .
every bend of these facilities is a constant threat to .
offsprings residing in the core of it all. Carolyn .
Demarest, a state trial judge , says that "These women are .
in prison because their life experiences have steadily .
undetermined their ability to cope". How can they possibly .
handle adjusting to prison life and caring for a young .
child? These inmates were not capable of doing well among.
society and were sentenced to caged quarters, which .
signifies to me, the severity of their offences and the .
risk they may be, to others and their child!.
