Caste System vs. Class System

The Caste system is something completely different than the Class system that is used here in the United States but in some ways they are also the same. Without inequality neither of these systems would even exist. Both of the systems measure inequality, yet in different ways. In the Caste System, which is used in India, there is no way an individual can move up or down in classes, and it is primarily based on that individuals" parents. It is also very strict as far as rules go. The Class System which is used in the United States is based solely on different groups and is more lenient than the Caste system. Most of these groups are separated according to occupation, or owned property. Both however, can relate to something called a semi caste model. The semi caste model is more predominantly from the United States. .
In any country's history a high stage of social development is reached only when the main social divisions are formed. In India the caste system has been used for a very long time. The Caste System consists of the Brahmins, Kshatriya's, Vaishya's, Shudra's, Sudra's and the Untouchables. The castes are listed from highest to lowest. Each Caste you are only born into, which means they are basically like an ascribed status. There is no mobility between each Caste, individuals cannot marry those who are outside of their Castes, which basically means they are stuck there for their entire life.
The Class System used in the United States however is somewhat the same but, also different in many ways. The Class System is seperated by occupation, income, and how much land the individual owns. People with high wages are at the top of the Class System, people with low wages are at the bottom. It is easy for people to move from class to class, yet if they are in lower class, it is hard to get out. The higher an individual is in the Class System, the more mobility that person has. So as you can see, an individual who lives in the Caste System rather than the Class System has less mobility than an individual who would be living under the Class system.
