Security Shield Life and Money

At home, who is responsible for the security? At school, who is looking after the kid's safety? At university campus, who is in charge for the students' lives? These questions make us believe that we should think about safety as something essential. Security is not an easy job. If a department did not consider the safety issues and expect things before they actually happen, both lives and money will be wasted.
To make things clearer, Clement, Young, Nord and Harris gave two examples of why we should reconsider security matters at campus. Two different stories were presented, yet both showed how silly mistakes can become lethal. Linda M. Clement states in her book "Confronting Undesirable Traditions: A Case Study" the first story. The incident took place at the University of Maryland. Fortunetly, there were no victims, however there was a huge loss of money. The basketball team of the University of Maryland was playing against the Duke University in the NCAA basketball tournament. Eventually, the home team lost the final and that caused a disturbance in all the university buildings. The University students through-out their books and papers, and carried mattress and couches into the streets while yelling "Duke sucks". Thousands of students assembled in the street as riots arosed across the campus. Police and fighterfighters were called at the seen and affter a few hours fire fighters managed to put out the fires that were caused by the student riots. At the end, more than $250,000 was spent to recover and restore the damages. Later on that day, everyone went back to their normal life. Nevertheless, no one expected that such a thing would happen on that day and no one took responsibility for it (Clement, 2002, p47). .
Michael Young, Dennis L. Nord and Yonie Harris narrated a story in "Addressing Ongoing Safety Issues" that took place at University of California, Santa Barbara. The story started when the acting chief of police at the university called the Dean of students and told her that "there had been a terrible car accident in Isla Vista" (Young, Nord, Harris, 2002, p57).
