Departmental Communication


             Definition: Departmental communication is the communication between two or more people working in close proximity over an extended period of time.
             II. Problem: The manager of a large advertising firm gives the employees directives for a large project and the employees fail to follow them due to the lack of respect of the manager. The employees were given the directives to start and complete a presentation on ideas for an ad campaign for a leading retail corporation and chose not to complete it due to the lack of respect for the manager.
             III. Decision: The manager decides to meet with the work group as a group and individually during the next week. He then will tell them as a group that their lack of cooperation will not be tolerated and could lead to their termination. However, he also decides to meet with each employee individually and asks each person respectfully, why they chose to disobey a specific directive.
             IV. Solution: The manager talks to the group on Monday and conveys the importance of following his directives. The manager uses a stern voice and slightly intimidates the group. A few days later, he meets with each of the eight employees individually for about 10 minutes and calmly explains that he must be respected, but if the employee has a problem, they are free to tell him the problem without being worried about the termination of their position for being honest with him. Over the next few week's productivity slowly increased over time. The manager increases his face to face meetings with his employees seeing that the meetings increased productivity. .
