Gimpel The Fool

The whole time, their definition of fool is wrongly placed towards Gimpel, and all the while, they are the ones who are acting foolishly. Their deficient judgment causes them to believe that it is funny to be dishonest. They believe that taking advantage of Gimpel is a laughing matter. .
Even his marriage is put together with lies from the towns people. They deceive Gimpel into marrying a woman who is impure. Gimpel hears people talking about his soon to be wife's scandalous background, and he still chooses to marry her. He marries knowing that she has not been and may still not be a pure woman. However his faith in her change is enough to clear her from blame. Therefore he marries her and asks no questions. He believes in her, and in doing so believes in the marriage also.
Later on in the story, Gimpel catches his wife in bed with another man. His wife then asks him to go and do something in the barn. Gimpel goes there, and upon returning, he sees no one in the bed. He then guesses that he had just seen a shadow, and then tries to reason as to why he would see a shadow during the night. He knows in his heart that his wife has just committed adultery with him. He knows also that adultery is grounds for a divorce in a marriage. However because of his deep love for his wife, he decides to cover it up and pretend like it never happened at all. .
Gimpel figures that throughout the story he would have much more to lose in not believing them than he would in believing them. He figures that if it were true, he would rather be the one who had faith in them, rather than one who was always questioning their statements. Besides, Gimpel said that the town would get very angry with him, if he didn't believe their statements. .
Gimpel figures that everyone already thinks him of being too gullible. By this time he has already made a name for himself, based on his believing of every word that they said.
