Managment

147). New Zealand employees posses this special quality where they believe they can "do more with less", and no matter what obstacles they are faced with, they are always willing to "give it a go". This positive attitude pays huge dividends in the workplace especially for small companies who can not afford to employ people who are not willing to give each task their best effort.
Probably the most important cultural advantage New Zealand possesses is that as a society we are very open. In a business open lines of communication lead to good workplace relations and also means jobs can get done at a faster rate than in a business where communication is stalled and information is transferred slowly. With open communication inside a business information can be passed freely and reach its intended destination to be analysed and processed faster. Open communication does not only originate from our cultural background, it has also been implemented in New Zealand firms because of their smaller size. Small New Zealand firms can not afford to have a closed communication system when they are competing with large global corporations. In companies which employ less than 100 people it is much easier to have open communication lines than in a larger company that employs hundreds or even thousands of people.
Many global size companies also implement a hierarchal system whereby information is passed up through the ranks to the CEO. In some New Zealand firms such as Westco Lagan, managers refrain from giving themselves titles. They want to be seen as approachable by the common employee which leads to a positive working atmosphere inside the company.
The open lines of communication enjoyed in many New Zealand businesses have often led to the construction of business networks with not only other New Zealand firms but also with overseas companies. These networks have allowed many small New Zealand firms to acquire a global reach.
