Success is....

            
             Success can be seen as having a good career, having a good pension to fall back upon, having a family, and falling in love. All the above are examples of success in peoples mind. However to truly understand success and indeed to full glory and respect with brings, one must only but glance at a team that have made a name for themselves for being the absolute best at what they do and in turn have become the most successful club in the history of sport, Wigan Rugby League.
             The town's first rugby club was Wigan F.C. founded in 1872 by a group of members of the town's Cricket Club. Until financial problems and an inability to recruit quality players led to a merger with Up Holland F.C. and the creation of a new club Wigan and District F.C. The new club played its home games at the then Wigan Cricket Club. Eighteen months later however and this initial foray into the world of rugby was over and the club disbanded.
             In 1879 a new club Wigan Wasps was formed following a meeting in the Dicconson Arms. This new rugby club evolved into the current Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club we now know today.
             The club initially played in blue and white hooped jerseys before changing in 1886 to the now famous "Cherry and White" hoops that are synonymous with the club today. In 1895 the Wigan club became founder members of the Northern Union following the breakaway from the Rugby Union. The move to form a league separate to that of union, with its own rules, was a bold one. None of the founding clubs quite knew what to expect, but failure to form a new style of rugby was not and never has been an option. However, people accepted to new rules, teams and purpose built stadiums with open arms. .
             You must remember that during this era (Victorian Britain) people were in dire need of leisure activites and entertainment. Wigan was a coal-mining town; the people worked hard and expected only the best from its teams.
