Christianity and Homosexuality

These cities had committed sin so grievous'(Gen 18:20) that the Lord had sent two angels (at least, they are thought to be angels) to investigate in Sodom. There they met Lot and were spending the night at his place when a mob of men of all ages gathered outside Lot's house and called: " Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out so that we can have sex with them.""(Gen 19:5). Shortly after this God rained sulfur on the two cities and brunt them to the ground. Prior to this the wickedness of the men of Sodom had been mentioned (Gen 13:13, NIV),coupled with the incident described above, this wickedness is thought by Christian conservatives to be their practice of homosexuality. .
As a result there are those conservatives who view homosexuality as reprehensible and so that gays should be accorded rights like marriage and adoption and even employment in extreme cases. They also believe that hate crime legislation protecting gays should be removed and most certainly are against the idea of gay clergymen.
Liberal Christians on the other hand take another view. Firstly there are differences in translation. According to the King James Version the mob surrounding Lot's house said "bring them out unto us, so that we may know them-. The Hebrew word Ya,da', is the verb to know. Usually it is used in the normal sense like to know a fact. However, in a few cases in can be in reference to sex as in a man "knowing- a woman leading to her conceiving a child from all the "knowing-. This point however can be countered by Lot's offer of his daughters to the mob which certainly was for the latter sense of the verb rather than the former since they were no strangers to the city.
Another point is that though the men of Sodom practiced homosexuality, the city was not destroyed because this but because of other transgressions. Later passages mention Sodom as a place of evil but do not mention homosexuality.
