Greeks and Romans had many similar forms of entertainment along with many differences. Both loved sports and competition. They both also had an amphitheater which was the main source of entertainment. Plays would be held in the day time because the sun was their only light. Although, they both loved sports and competition, they had different ways of competing. The Romans felt the bloodier the event, the better. One of their favorite kinds of entertainment was gladiator fights. Gladiator fights took place in the Coliseum. The Coliseum had stadium seating and held up to 50,000 people. Sometimes gladiators would battle each other, and sometimes they would battle against an animal. .
Another form of entertainment was the chariot races. These were held in the Circus Maximus which held up to 200,000 people. Many of the people enjoyed watching other people get run over more than the actual race itself. The Romans had something called Roman bath houses which were like modern day fitness centers. Greeks, on the other hand, were more civil concerning their entertainment. They had plays held at the amphitheater during the day just like the Romans. There were two types of plays, tragedies and comedies. Tragedy plays were plays that had a main character go through much suffering just to end up doomed in a sad and tragic ending. An example of a tragedy is Oedipus Rex where the lead character*s fate was to marry his mother and kill his father. Comedy is another type of play. Unlike tragedies, comedies are more humorous plays that have happy endings. An example of a comedy is Lysistrata. .
The Olympics were held by the Greeks. It was a series of athletic contests used to test someone strength. The Olympics were held every four years to honor the chief God, Zeus. Only men were allowed to participate and watch these events. It was also done in the nude. Overall, the Romans and Greeks had many sorts of entertainment.
