When one attempts to acquire knowledge he must firstly make a decision to accept whatever knowledge that might be. Now the notion of having to make a decision brings us back to the concept of rationality versus emotions, which is one way we can determine whether or not emotions serve as an obstruction. Although seemingly trivial, take for example one's decision to watch a television program, which would subsequently serve as a means of medical enlightenment, but would only exist provided the watcher endured countless scenes of graphic matter. In the long run, by tolerating the short term setbacks, one will have a long term understanding of whatever topic the show might incorporate. However, in regards to the emotions the show might evoke, a person may choose not to watch the program so to evade any emotions that might cause serious and negative impacts on that one person. Although rooting from television programs is rare, trauma can cause serious damage to one's emotional stability, and thus although one might be in the position to gain more knowledge, acknowledging the emotions that might be entailed with such a gain, would be wise as it would prevent any negative outcomes. In fact it seems, that in order to make a wise decision, in general, one needs to incorporate both emotions and logic, as it allows for the weighting of both sides. .

Essentially Damasio concluded, after studying those with both healthy and damaged brains that in the case of a decision, both the emotional and rational side of the brain are triggered thus proving that in the acquiring of knowledge, to be efficient in its reception, we must invoke both emotions and logic.
