George Washington


            George Washington was a great American, with many accomplishments. He was the first President of the United States and the general who won the Revolutionary War. He helped give us our freedom. Truly, he was the father of our nation.
             George Washington was born in the state of Virginia in Westmoreland County. He was born an Englishman. His mother was Mary Bell Washington. His father Augustine, died when George was eleven. He also had a half brother named Lawrence, who was George's favorite. He never went to an actual school. His mother taught him everything he knew. He was very good at arithmetic and later learned to survey, which he loved. George grew to be strong, tall and bold. .
             He got married to Martha Dandridge Custis, who had two children, Patsy and Jack. George fought for the English in the French and Indian War and helped to run the Virginia government. Later he was a member of the Continental Congress. When the Americans declared their independence on July 4, 1776, the Congress asked him to be the general in charge of the new army. He was a very good general and won the Revolution-ary war for the United States against Great Britain.
             Washington was elected to be the first President of the United States of America. He had no opponents against him. After eight years he retired to his home in Mt. Vernon, Virginia. George Washington died on Dec. 14, 1799 of pneumonia .
             He could have served as President as long as he wanted to, but he said that a man should not serve more than two terms as President. He truly is the founding father of our nation, an honest, diligent and smart man.
