Gun control


            
             There are many factors that contribute to the death of a person. Illness, old age, disease, natural cause, murder, and suicide are some of the factors. However, one important factor that could be prevented, or reduced is that which involves the use a gun. Guns are the main weapons used in this age. Although knives, poison, etc. are used to kill human beings, guns have been the most common weapons. The use of guns and the right to bear arms and restrictions on guns start with the government. Therefore, because guns contribute to gang behaviors, crimes, suicides, and wrongful deaths, there should be tighter gun restrictions.

             The use and possession of guns is prevalent in the United States. "The presence or absence of gun laws in the United States rest with the political process involving Congress, the presidency, and state and local governments."" (Spitzer 43) The U.S. is the only democracy that does not have strict gun control laws, which is obvious in the crime rate. (Long 30) In American society deaths caused by guns make little impact. In the media everyday gun related incidents are reported. The newspaper, radio, and television are all sources in which you can read, hear, and see about gun related incidents. To do something about gun problems the United States have set some laws about guns, which have no affect. "The U.S. has 20,000 gun laws on record today."" Even though the U.S. has more gun laws than any other country, the laws are less restrictive than those in other countries. (Strahinich 47) America's homicide rate is higher than any other Western industrialized country. (Levine 27) Our reputation of guns affects our homicide rate. "In 1991, the U.S. suffered 21,505 murders, with guns being responsible for 14,265 of the deaths."" (Scarinano 9) Guns are the source of three out of five murders in the U.S. (Strahinich 3) Thirty-four Americans die every ten hours. (Strahinich 4) With these statistics one could think that tighter restrictions would be the logical solution.
