For the next two years all his attempts to get his acts ratified failed, he bought the consulship for his former lieutenant Afranius, but even this did not work as his fellow consul Metellus Celer had become a fierce opponent of Pompey after he had divorced his half sister Mucia for adultery . In the senate Cato had dragged Lucullus from his debaucheries and had him challenge Pompey's arrangements .
