Why You Lie To a Parent

The most common reason for lying, according to most psychologists, is to avoid getting in trouble. Many teenagers lie to their parents about something they did or somewhere they went. Lying could get you accused or even arrested for something you didn't do, cause you to become addicted to drugs or alcohol and result in you losing the respect and trust of friends and family. I recall a friend of mine who made some wrong choices in his life and eventually landed in jail. I asked him once where he thought it all started to go wrong. He told me how he had lied to his parents so that he could go to a party, when he was a teenager, where he was exposed to and experimented with drugs and became addicted causing a downward spiral that continued until he was arrested and thrown in jail.
There are many who lie about their destination for an evening. They are planning on going to a rave, or using a fake id to get into a bar or club. They know their parents would not allow them to go if they knew the truth, so they fabricate a tale about where they will be. Usually they say they will be at a friend's house, while that friend says they will be somewhere else. Using the "cover" they have created, they go off and have fun in a place they are not supposed to be.
More often the reasons for lying are more severe. For example, underage teenagers who have been smoking will lie to their parents. Also, if there is an addiction to a drug, such as ecstasy, cocaine, or even marijuana, or to alcoholic beverages they will lie about this as well. Usually the lie is so they can get money to support their secret habit or so they can indulge without fear of being caught. Stealing is something else they will lie about and is usually combined with another forbidden habit, so they can afford it if money is not readily available.
Another reason you might lie to a parent is because you want to surprise them in some way.
