George Washington

Shortly after his resignation Washington was back on the fighting line, this time as a volunteer, which "enhanced" his reputation and he was soon promoted to "colonel and commander in chief of the Virginia militia." Also in the war, Washington brought back "crucial intelligence" from the French and Indian territories to Lieutenant Governor Robert Dinwiddie and was made a "colonial hero," giving him glory and position. This experience in war gave Washington "knowledge of border warfare, invaluable experience in training, and discipline," which would be helpful in later years as he once again was faced with many difficulties. Although Washington played a major part in driving the French from British North America, he would soon be driven away from the British side and become a great leader for American Independence.
At the age of twenty-three Washington became interested in running for office. His first try at office was running for the House of Burgesses in Virginia, which was the first government and first elected assembly in the American colonies. However he was young and did not receive enough votes. Washington never gave in to defeat, so he tried running for office again; this time in Winchester County, Washington, but did not win that election either. It is strange that Washington had problems trying to get into office, since in his life he would become the first president of the United States and be great at it. .
At the age of forty-three George Washington was once again headed for combat. This time he fought for the American colonies, during the American Revolution, as Commander in Chief. Washington and his troops fought in nine different battles and were only victorious in three. In 1776 Washington and his troops "fashion[ed] a noose" around Boston and drove the British out. However, the war was not over. As a commander in 1777 Washington struggled with many defeats, including being defeated many times in and around New York.
