The Public Opinion of Police and Their Activities

The media, whether it is news, film, novels, or television, have more of negative effect on how the people view policing agencies than any other source. Hollywood often portrays police as being reckless, destructive, and more often than not trigger-happy vigilantes. Such movies that portray these characteristics are Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Dirty Harry. These movies are intended to be action films, but in the process gives cops a bad image when it comes to their maturity and discipline. On top of the vast majority of populous affected by "Hollywood" the news media haves an even larger effect on the opinions of how an officer of the law conducts him or herself. In most cases the news media will give the image of a successful police action being a complete failure with areas that could have been improved upon. Such is the case in South Carolina involving a drug raid conducted in a local high school. " The police conducted the raid during the period when students were transiting between classes. The police entered the building with weapons drawn at the ready position and preceded to go through the building. The raid was targeted towards students believed to be selling narcotics and were also suspected of gang activity." (Police school district 1). The parents of many of the students were infuriated by what the news made out to be an unnecessary show of force. But what is not mentioned by the news was that many of the students were also suspected to be armed and may have decided to use force rather than cooperate. And the news claimed that the school board was not at fault for the incident and that the .
police acted without informing the school about the plans for action. However a week later CNN retracted their statement by saying " Before Conducting the raid the police had .
Contacted and discussed the plans for action to be used for the raid. The principle and super intendment of the school approved the proposal made by the police.
