Sport was seen as recreation a way to lift the spirits. In 1942 both Horse and Greyhound racing was restricted. The Prime Minister Robert Menze stated that there was "no reason for sport to stop".
             The effect of different Cultures.
             The period after the Second World War was a time of growth and expansion. Sportsmen and woman became the heroes with huge crowds of spectators attending all sports events.
             With the huge flood of immigrants arriving from Europe other sports became popular. With many of the immigrants coming from England Greece, Germany and Italy soccer became a widely enjoyed sport. Other sports like football flourished with Australians using their leisure time to enjoy the sport of their choice.
             The Olympic Games .
             The ideals of the Olympic Games are that each sports person is an amateur who competes without payment, that the games are an international competition between the worlds's best, representing their own country in fair and equal competition.
             In 1896 the first modern Olympics where held in Athens. Eden Flank was Australia's only competitor winning two gold medals for swimming. .
             .
             Women were not included at all in the first one hundred years of sport in Australia. By the 1890's Women were playing sports such as golf and tennis. However because of the superior physical power of men who are also usually larger with bigger muscles women were not taken seriously. Sponsor's were only able to raise money by promoting the look of the women for example the tennis skirt was designed for sex appeal.
             In spite of this women have been able to compete against each other in the Olympic Games successfully. Australian women have been prominent in the success of Australia in the Olympics especially in track and field with Cathy Freeman winning gold and holding world records for country. Dawn Fraser is known all around the world for her years of superiority in the pool. However Fanny Durack was the first Australian women to win a gold medal in the pool in 1912.
