Antigone

"As long as I am king, no traitor is going to be honored with the loyal man, but whoever shows by word that he is on the side of the state "he shall have my respect while he is living, and my reverence when he is dead."" This passage shows that he wants to be fair to everyone. He's not going to let a traitor get off easily. They won't be given his respect and will be punished. On the other hand, he states that the respectable people that are on the side of the state will get his respect. King Creon says that non-traitors will have his reverence when they are dead. This means they will get a proper burial. In the ancient Greek time, they believe that if you don't get a proper burial, then the God's send you to hell. The citizens want to follow the laws of the Gods for this reason. Creon's concept of who should receive an honorable burial is shown as he states, "Eteocles, who died as a man should die, fighting for his country, is to be buried with full military honors but his brother Polyneisces, who broke exile to come back with fire and sword against his nature cities it to have no burial."" If Creon had made the decision to bury both of the brothers, he would not be in this situation. Both of the brothers were in the wrong because Eteocles would not give up the thrown to Polyneisces. These are the reasons why King Creon had potential for greatness. .
The flaw that Creon made by not burying Polyneisces and punishing Antigone makes him the tragic hero. He had just made his new law and was going to follow it. The pride that Creon had influenced his decisions in the play. When Creon says that the only thing he wants the Chorus to do is give no support to whoever breaks this law, Choragus does not agree with it. It is shown as Choragos states, "Only a crazy man is in love with death!- Creon does not want to listen to him. He does not even consider that Choragos could be right about Creon's law.
