A Change In History

On August 6, 1945 at 8:15 in the morning, the world's way of war changed forever. The first atomic bomb had been unleashed, and some would say it was the worst mistake in history.
One greatly argued reason that we should not have dropped the bomb is that prior to it's fall, a minimum if six American war leaders were having second thoughts about it's use (3). There is no doubt that these men were highly educated in the ways of war and should not make such a judgment on a whim. Perhaps more attention should have been paid to what these men had to say. .
In June before the bomb was dropped, seven atomic scientists met at the Metallurgical Lab in Chicago to discuss manners with which to withhold the use of the atomic bomb. After what is assumed to be much contemplation, they arrived at the decision that the use of the bomb was not advisable, at least not in this manner (23). The fact that these intellectuals had such a strong opinion about the subject should have been enough to raise a few eyebrows in the white house and make everyone think a little harder on the subject. .
Thirdly, the Chief of Staff to President Truman himself felt that the bomb would be "of no material help", that Japan was "already defeated and ready to surrender" (7). It is absolutely astonishing that Mr. Truman did not pay more attention to the prodding of this man. In addition, the Secretary to the Japanese War Minister shared in an interview in 1963 that if the Americans had just made a second and possibly third attack on Japan, the small country would quickly run out of food, supplies, and weaponry. In fact, he seemed to strongly believe that "the Americans could have won without using the atomic bomb" (9). The fact that both American and Japanese officials believe that Japan was not far from surrender and that the bomb was completely unnecessary for an American defeat is breathtaking. How could such evidence be overlooked when determining the future of so many civilians? .
