Love Written in Addictive Circumstances' in Bront ¸'s Wuther

When he dies, Hindley takes control of the Heights and forces Heathcliff into servitude. It is with after suffering from hostile treatment that Catherine and Heathcliff decide to rebel. "I [Catherine] wish my father were back again. Hindley is a detestable substitute - his conduct to Heathcliff is atrocious - H. and I are going to rebel - (page 21). Hindley rules over the Heights in any way he sees fit; he is not fair to its inhabitants. The new environment has a lack of love and respect; the only source Catherine and Heathcliff have of these things is each other. Mr. Earnshaw's stable structure is broken with Hindley becoming the master of Wuthering Heights. .
The circumstance, or condition that affects this relationship, is that both Catherine and Heathcliff love and live on a selfish level. A significant aspect of addictive love is the lover's need to possess the other being, regardless of the effect this might have on the latter. Two particular situations exhibit this aspect of addictive love perfectly. The first situation pertains to Catherine answering Nelly's question, "Why do you love him [Edgar Linton], Miss Cathy?- (Page 88) "Well, because he is handsome, and pleasant to be with and because he is young and cheerful and, because he loves me and he will be rich - (Page 88-89). All these are poor reasons for marriage, because they all are changeable; marriage is not about the present, it is about the future. Marrying Edgar is convenient for her because she wants to be able to use Edgar's money to help support Heathcliff, who is her soul mate. If this is what she wants to do, Catherine should have discussed the matter with Heathcliff first. There is a chance that Heathcliff would not agree to sharing her with Edgar. Catherine immediately assumes Heathcliff will go along with the plan, because she believes it to be the most beneficial arrangement. She does not even think that this arrangement might hurt Heathcliff, instead of helping him.
