Human cloning


            
             There are many controversial topics out there that many people believe strongly in. One of the topics stood out to me because it's a fairly new concept and not much is known about it. This topic was chosen in hopes of learning about it. The controversial topic is the cloning of human beings. Some people think that just because humans are able to clone themselves, doesn't me we should. While others believe that there are medical breakthroughs that can come from it, and the technology should be used.
             The first step towards human cloning came in 1997 when a group of Scottish scientists made the first clone of an animal. Dolly, the name given to the cloned sheep, took 277 attempts to create. Along with a very low success rate of about three percent, it is very expensive to create a human clone. A Las Vegas couple planned to pay 500,000 dollars to clone their daughter who died at the age of ten months as a result of a medical accident. The couple had some cells from her body saved in the hope of producing an identical twin of her in the future. Although that is a large amount of money, there is always someone out there willing to pay it. .
             One company, Clonaid, is claming to have cloned five people so far. It started in 1997 by Rael, the leader of the Raelian movement who believes that extraterrestrials created human life on earth. They say that extraterrestrials used DNA and genetic engineering to create all life on earth.
             Until lately there wasn't a federal law against human cloning in the United States. Recently the House of Representatives passed a bill to bad all types of human cloning.

             Several states have passed their own laws against cloning. The FDA, Food and Drug Administration, has said that anyone who wants to attempt human cloning must first get permission. In other countries like Japan, human cloning is illegal and if caught you can spend up to ten years in prison. In England it isn't illegal to practice human cloning but they are trying to pass a law that will ban all types of it.
