Smoking

Nicotine is one of the most heavily used addictive drugs in the United States. Cigarette advertisements is the reason why most people start to smoke. They drag people into believing that they are delicious and good for you. The tobacco industry makes smoking seem like a "cool" thing to do. If cigarettes weren't advertised in magazines so much, not as many people would smoke. Adolescents are highly at risk to begin smoking at a very young age because most of their friends smoke, or they are drawn to it by the advertisements. Maybe if there weren't so many ways to get dragged into it, less people would be smoking. Tobacco companies spend $4 billion annually to promote cigarettes as healthy, refreshing, and generally part of the good life.

I myself am not a smoker and never plan on smoking but I have looked at a cigarette ad in a magazine and thought it was a nice ad. They make them look like everyone is having a good time and that they are enjoying the cigarette. One of my friends never smoked before but when she saw the ad, she went out and bought a pack even though she never smoked before. Cigarettes are very deceiving. People know what they are getting into when they start, however, they aren't thinking about their health, they are thinking about the feeling they get when they smoke.
