The effect of disease on a culture

In today's society, life is a fast paced, and always moving place, where people do not take the time to take care of themselves. Due to this we have many incurable and new diseases spreading throughout the world. One of them being SARS. SARS stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, and this essay will talk about its effect on the economic situations in Toronto, and its effects on the Roman Catholic Religion.
One of the main things SARS is affecting is our religion. During this time many of our traditions that strengthen the bonds in our church community have had to be suspended because of the possible risks. One of our most sacred traditions, the sharing of the cup of life, and also a handshake as a sign of peace is no longer allowed because of the risk of infection. Our religion is stepped in hundreds of years of tradition, when you start restricting our traditions it is like you are tearing down the foundation of the church. While we can understand suspending drinking from the same cup while this epidemic is in our midst, it is too hard to believe that people would be too afraid to show a sign of peace towards on another. If we listen to what our religion says we would know that "a Christ-like love is not repulsed by illness", and by being brave in the face of sickness, and showing our love towards God, we are in a way helping to fight the disease.
Toronto is Ontario's greatest metropolis, with a great driving force behind it centered largely on tourism and business. When the World Health Organization put the travel restriction on Toronto it damaged the two main industries that make Toronto such a successful city. Torontonians depend on tourists and people on business trips to buy things from their stores, and stay in their hotels. Without tourists or people on business trips they are losing major amounts of income.
In conclusion I would have to say that SARS has a great effect on Toronto's economic situation, and the Roman Catholic Religion.
