Charm isn't a manipulative or destructive force in the eyes of average people. It was an undetected poison. At one point, Dexter believes he is on the right track with Judy, to a long life together. Fitzgerald comments,It was the exquisite excitability that for the moment he controlled and owned? (10). The word controlled in this sentence means that Dexter thinks everything is falling into place, and that the relationship is healthy. Judy only meant for Dexter to feel in control. She wanted him to taste what they would never be, so that he would always feel everything was fulfilled. The word also means that even though Dexter thinks he is in control, it is in fact Judy that is in charge. Dexter's feeling of control is very ironic, since in essence he is being masqueraded. The author's use of diction in the passage develops the general idea that Judy presides over Dexter.
Fitzgerald's use of description and detail further indicate Judy's hierarchy over Dexter. The author comments,Her deficiencies were knit up with a passionate energy that transcended and justified them? (7). This quote means that although Dexter tries to see the advantage Judy has over him, her innocence bars him from seeing past her skin. Judy masked her schemes by being the young and pretty girl, the one that would never harm another being or take advantage of others. This quote also means that Judy's guise covering her true intentions preside over the right and the just. Her mask in essence could come before justice, and implies passage even before God. Judy was a desirable woman and she knew it, and often used it for her own fulfillment. Fitzgerald writes,She simply made men conscious to the highest degree of her physical loveliness? (5). This quote means that Judy flaunted her physicality knowingly. She was a beautiful woman and she knew it, and so did Dexter. Often showing off her beauty in extravagant outfits she suckered poor men like Dexter into her web.
