All the characters in Steinbeck's Of 2/ "Isolation, despair and destruction pervade Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.".
Mice and Men are lonely and the person who represents this most is Culrey's wife, one of the most pivotal characters in the novel. Curley's wife is isolated as she is a woman living during the depression and is stuck living on the ranch her new husband's father owns. She is the only women on the ranch and being the provocative harlot she is and using her sexuality to gain attention from the men on the ranch she is seen as "jail bait" (page54). Curley's wife just wants to be noticed she is a very beautiful " A girl was standing there looking in. She had full rouged lips and wide spaced eyes heavily made up-I"m looking for Curley," she said." (page 32) .
Curley's wife is viewed as trouble and is seen as a rat trap none of the men on the ranch want to deal with her and this makes Curley's wife very upset ""Whats the matter with me?" she cried. Ain't I got the right to talk to nobody? Whatta they think I am, anyways?" Curley's wife suffers from extreme boredom on the ranch and "has got the eye" ( page 29) due to her mundane relationship with her husband that does not satisfy her even though "Curley's got a "glove fulla vasoline" (page 29) this does satisfy this girl she wants to be loved and appreciated. Curley's wife's marriage leaves her feeling more isolated and alone then if she wasn't married at all. The men on the ranch are well aware that Curley's wife has got the eye but believe it's easier to use a prostitute then deal with Curley who is extremely insecure about his marriage as he knows his wife doesn't love him and only married him because times were hard.
