             John Evans was a territorial governor which ordered the Cheyenne and Arapaho leaders to move to the reservations. When the tribes ignored Evans, he was forced to send the local militia in. After around 5 months of fighting the militia, Black Kettle, who was the leader of Cheyenne surrendered. .
             After The Sand Creek Massacre Indian leaders signed the Treaty of Medicine Lodge and the second Treaty of Fort Laramie. .
             In the first Treaty of Fort Laramie Native Americans promised control of the Plains. In the Treaty of Medicine Lodge Plain Indians agreed to move to Indian territories. In the second Treaty of Fort Laramie the Sioux agreed to move reservation to Black Hills.
             In 1875 the US Government forced the Sioux to move out of the Black Hills, because gold was found there and many whites settled in that area. Although many Indians moved out of the Black Hills, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse stayed and gathered 2,000 men prepared to fight from the Cheyenne and Sioux tribes. General George Armstrong attacked Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse with only 200 men. After the final attack, which lasted an hour, Custer and his men lay dead. .

             Chief Joseph tried to safe his tribe from the US Government by escaping to Canada. After he traveled 1000 miles north toward Canada, he surrendered to Colonel Nelson. Chief Joseph had only 30 miles left to reach Canada. .
