Andrew Jackson and the Indians

They were eventually ruled a "domestic dependant nation." This would allow them to be able to receive federal protection. Jackson overruled this decision because he claimed he had more power than anybody and he could basically do what ever he wanted which explains how he abuses his power as president. .
             In the late 1830's, the Indian tribes of the east were leaving one after the other. The first of the tribes to leave and head west were the Choctaw tribe. Right after the Choctaws headed west, the Chickasaws made the journey and were finally past the Mississippi river about three years later. By 1838 the Creeks and the Cherokees became the last tribes in the southeast to be forced off their land, mostly by the military and held the Indians at gunpoint. They were ordered to leave quickly so they could only grab what they could get their hands on and were not allowed to bring certain items with them. .
             On the way to the reservations, the trails were very rough terrain, which lead to a lot of deaths among the Indians, plus they had no medical attention for the ones that got sick on the way. Most of the Indians traveled without proper clothing for the long move across the country. They were wearing very thin clothing which did not help in the cold weather. A lot of the Indians had no moccasins to protect their feet from the rough ground and transportation was only used by ones that could afford it, so walking barefoot was the choice of transportation. The food supply was the worse. The whites took most of their food before they could even leave and they left the Indians them with a short supply of rotten food to eat. Thousands died on the Tear of Trails. The pain and suffering of the Indians was all due to Andrew Jackson.
             Anthony F.C. Wallace wrote this book in a biographical format. There is no actually story but the history of the Andrew Jackson and the Indians itself. I think Wallace intended the story for audiences who were interested in that time period and the expansion of the United States.
