Othello

.
Love, if he loves, must be to him the heaven where either he must live or bear no life. If such a passion as jealousy seizes him, it will swell into a well-nigh incontrollable flood. Convinced, he will act with the authority of a judge and the swiftness of a man in mortal pain (Bradley 28).
Othello undoubtedly is passionately in love with Desdemona for at the mere sight of her, Othello, himself, comments: .
It gives me wonder great as my content .
To see you here before me. O my soul's joy! .
If after every tempest come such calms,.
May the winds blow till they have wakened death! (2 .1 .183-186).

Othello whole-heartedly loves Desdemona, but it was not so in regards to his trust for her. He only recently began courting Desdemona and has not yet invested the time and commitment to the relationship that forges trust. Their relationship could be summed up by the phrase, "young love."" Young love most often lacks whole-hearted trust, for trust does not come easily in any relationship, especially a marriage. Any seed of distrust lingering in the backdrop of their sacred vows can, at any time, be stimulated. Despite Othello's numerous military conquests, awards, and achievements, at his core is this seed of insecurity. "So we start with an Othello who is not jealous, but who is in some ways vulnerable. Shakespeare then makes him subject to a clever attack which is aimed at his most vulnerable points."" (Jones 47) This insecurity is Othello's most vulnerable point. Othello's insecurity is the prey on which Iago, Othello's backstabbing servant, plays the host. .
Othello's fall is greatly hastened by Iago. What prompts Iago to commit such a bastardly act one may ask? As an idealist, Othello is Iago's subject of envy, for Iago is a hopeless cynic. "Othello's idealism has attracted Iago as inexorably as the innocence of Adam and Eve attracted Satan. He is drawn to Othello even as he hates him.
