gun control

When the Second Amendment was written guns were a very crucial part of the everyday life of Americans. This was a very primitive time where every man had to fend for himself and defend for his land and family. Americans used their guns during this time period for hunting to put food on the tables, fighting the British, and even for defending their homes against the savage Indians ( Sommers 21) . Guns are not used in this way anymore. Guns have lost the meaning and value that they once had in the past. Guns of today are now used for personal protection against criminals, for gun shows and for recreational hunting. This draws some to the conclusion that the way that the Second Amendment is stated in the past does not have the same meaning in the world of today.
The Second Amendment also has many words that have different definitions for different people. Two of the controversial words in the Second Amendment is "people- and "militia- . What does "the right of the people- really mean in the Second Amendment? People who support gun control believe that it means that the people may only bear arms to protect the security of the state (Aitkens 29) . In other words it means if another country was to invade the United States then it would only be ok then for the citizens of the United States to bear arms. They also believe that the phrase "a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state- which is used in the Second Amendment means that each state only has the right to create is own militia (Aitkens 29) . .
The people who are against gun control believe that the words "people- mean all Americans as individuals (Aitkens 29) . They point out the fact that the phrase "the right of the people- which is used in the Second Amendment is also used in the First and Forth Amendments too. In the First and Forth Amendment the "right of the people- means the guaranteed right of free speech , assembly, and petition of the individual people (Aitkens 29) .
