In the October 28th, 2003 issue of The Advertiser newspaper I have found an article which brings to our knowledge that a terror suspect by the name of Willie Virgile Brigitte recently married a Sydney woman.
The man was recently arrested and deported back to France where he originally came from, and will be facing charges of plotting a terror campaign.
The article states that Willie Virgile Brigitte admitted he was trained as an interrogations specialist by al-Qaida operatives in Yemen, Pakistan and the Punjab Valley.
Not only was he planning an attack on Australian soil, but whilst working as a restaurant hand he was awaiting training with explosives from a friend from abroad.
I think that he planning an attack on Australian soil affects all of the Australians, to think that he could have chosen South Australia as a target endangers and worries the community.
I also think that it is too easy for foreigners to come from abroad to Australia, I think there should be more strict identification rules on people from overseas.
The article also states that the 35-year old married an Australian citizen in early September just two weeks before French authorities warned Australian counterparts about his presence.
I think that is one of the main issues in the article, I think that worldwide authorities should be very strict with persons who leave or visit the country; I think the French authorities should increase their departments in order to not have this happen again.
On October 7 the Australian Federal Police and ASIO agents briefed NSW Police on his presence in Sydney. He was arrested two days later and deported on October 19.
I think that the NSW Police could have been a lot faster with their reactions to the knowledge of the danger of the this man, but I also think the fact that they did find him reasonably quickly and had him deported without question gives comfort to the community of New South Whales and the rest of the public in Australia.
