The Chosen

Danny Saunders and Reuven Maltar have been building up a very strong relationship over the beginning of the book. Not the normal kind of friendly relationship, but the best friends always there for each other type of relationship. They go to the library together and read books even though Danny's father forbids it. Something very surprising happens while Danny, Reuven, and Danny's father are studying Talmud. Danny's father knows Danny had been reading at the library behind his back and instead of confronting his son, he tells Danny to go get tea for them, and he asks Reuven, "I must know what he is reading. And I cannot ask him." .
Reuven telling Danny's father what Danny reads is not what hurts the boys relationship, it's what Reuven says when he and Danny are walking home that hurts the relationship. "But I told him I wished he could somehow get around to talking about it with his father." Danny's response to this is ""I can't!" he said, a little angry now. "Don't you listen to what I"m saying? I just can't!"" Reuven's pushing on a subject that Danny really doesn't want to talk about ends up with a little bit of hostility on Danny's part. This problem between Danny and his father could cause problems in Danny and Reuven's relationship further down the road, because I believe Reuven will not settle down until he finds out why Danny and his father never talk.
