Have you ever taken the time to consider how you feel about conscription, the believe that a country has the right to force mandatory civil service on its citizens, more commonly known as "a draft"? Before discussing the main topic of this paper, it will be necessary to define and explain the word "draft". " The military draft, also called conscription or national service, is a system of selecting men, and occasionally women, for required military service. According to Webster the word "draft" means: to select. On a compulsory basis; to conscript for military service. A Military draft is the practice of a government forcibly conscripting members of the population into the armed forces (Draft 1). This is a violation of the right to life, an initiation of force by the state against the individual, and a betrayal of the purpose of the government (Landauer 1).In this paper I will speak about the three main issues that support my views about the draft, unjust wars, the physiological aspect of the draft and the effectiveness of the draft.
I am a citizen of the United States of America and am of age to be drafted. Our nation is currently at war against terrorism, and at war with Iraq. When I am no longer a student, I will be eligible for the draft as are many of my friends already. Also, there has been a bit of discussion in the news recently concerning the draft and weather or not it should be instated. .
Today, people question the government's actions just like they did in the 1960's, and the issue of the draft are as controversial today as it was then. The first main reason, is that if the military draft is illegitimate, certain civilians may feel war to be unjust. Back in the 1960's, many of the older generation thought that it was a young man's obligation to serve his country. Others felt that the war in Vietnam was unjust. Many young men questioned why they should fight if they didn't believe that the war was moral (Clifford 318).
