Peru: What a place

.
Don't be surprised if the Andean cities offer you an unpleasant sensation called soroche, or altitude sickness. Due to the high altitude of many of our tourist sites it is not unusual to feel this way. It helps to stay hydrated and eat light. Clinics in the country have English speaking staffs however CARE has medical staff members as well who will follow us on all out journeys. .
As Peru's urban centers have grown, so has petty crime and as in every other tourist place, theft is a problem. Pickpockets and thieves have become more common in places like Lima and Cuzco. We recommend that you do not wear any costly clothes or jewelry. If you do, please keep them covered. Keep an eye on all your belongings such as camera cases and shoulder bags. Thieves have become experts at slitting them open unnoticed. Some people pose as policemen; other tricksters may pose as taxi drivers or use other diversionary tactics to take advantage of the tourists. Keep alert at the airports, and at night, please travel in groups. At the height of the Sendero Luminoso, Shining Path, terrorist campaign tourism and travel to Peru dropped tremendously. The arrest in 1992 of the group's leader sparked major interest. The terrorist attacks have decreased extremely but they have not come to a completed stop. Visitors are seldom attacked directly, but be on your guard. A special security service has been provided for our CARE group and they will also be traveling with us to various places.
PART 2: THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT .
Peru varies greatly in climate and geography and is divided into three main geographical regions, the Costa (Coast), the Sierra (Andes), and the Selva (Amazon Basin). The coastal region extends the length of the country from the border of Ecuador to the border of Chile. It reaches its greatest width in the north, and narrows towards the south. In Northern Peru and along the coast in bordering Ecuador the coast is warm and humid; its natural vegetation is tropical rainforest.
