The Best of Friends, The Worst

"Sure, I"ll be over in a few!" exclaimed Pete.
Pete asked his father if he could take the truck to pick up Joe and head into town to the shop to see what was available for the truck. His father was somewhat opposed to his idea at first.
"That thing is in no condition to be driving anywhere right now," Pete's father explained. "I didn't even want to drive it here myself, ha-ha." He laughed.
"BUT DAD!" Joe whined, "I really love the truck, and I want to see how much fun we can have with it.".
Finally his father gave in, being the pushover that he is. How could he stand in the way of his son being so happy after he had just made him that way?.
"Please, just be very careful," he pleaded.
"I will dad." Joe stated as he hopped in the cab and said, "Thanks a lot.".
Joe pumped the gas pedal and turned the key. The big 8 cylinder fired to life, but immediately belched a huge backfire. Joe tried again, and this time it fired and stayed running. He stepped in the clutch and slid the gear selector toward the slot for reverse. The transmission gears began to groan and grind as he jammed the selector into position. He slowly released the clutch while applying some gas at the same time. The truck started to roll backward up the hill out of the driveway, as it hopped and jumped the whole way. He knew then that there was more work to be done. That clutch would have to be looked at as well. He backed the rest of the way out the driveway and slid the gear selector into the first forward gear. Pete took off slowly down .
the gravel road. Joe lived about two miles away on the same dusty roadway. "Finally," Pete thought to himself, "I am free to roam the world as I wish." He had no idea what actually lay in store for him in the future.
As Pete enjoyed the ride, he came upon the driveway of the Schone family and pulled in. As he tried to slow down, he realized what his father was talking about with the truck not being fit to drive.
