He inherited land from his father and began building Monticello when he was 26. Three years later he married Martha Skelton. She died 10 years later, but they had 6 children, but only two live to be adults. He attended college of William and Mary and studied law. He served on the local government, too. He was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He left the Congress in 1776 and served in the legislature. He was governor of Virginia from 1779 to 1781. In 1790 he accepted the post secondary of state under George Washington. In 1796 he became vice president to John Adams. For years later he became president. This was the first peaceful presidential transfer from one party to another party. Some of his achievements were the purchase of the Louisiana Territory and his support of the Lewis and Clark expedition. He is remembered for his efforts of staying neutral in the conflict between France and Britain. Jefferson lost the presidency to James Madison in 1809. At the age of 76 Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. He died on July 4, 1826 on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (Brief). .
             The 16th president was Abraham Lincoln. He was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. His mother died when he was eight years old, shortly after the family moved to Indiana. His father married Sarah Johnston, who was really good to Lincoln. She encouraged him to read even though she couldn't. He received hardly any formal .
             education. Only one year was about how much schooling he received. In 1830 they moved to Illinois. When he was 21 he went out on his own. He worked at various jobs. He decided to study law to pursue a political office. He educated himself and passed his exam. A couple years before that he was elected to serve four terms in Illinois State Legislature. He was considered one of the best lawyers in the state. On November 4, 1842 he married Mary Todd.
