Karl Marx


His parents had four children which Karl was the oldest. .
             In High school, Karl stood out among the crowd. The school he went to accentuate on languages, and Marx's Latin and Greek verse were very good. When asked to write a report on how to choose a profession he took a different approach. He took the angle in which most interested him, by saying that there was no way to choose a profession, but because of circumstances one is placed in an occupation. A person with an aristocratic background is more likely to have a higher role in society as opposed to someone from a much poorer background.
             "But we cannot always choose the career for which we believe we have vocation. Our social relations have already begun to form, to some extent, before we are in a position to determine them." - Karl Marx: a biography, page 10.
             In October 1835, Marx left home for the University of Bonn which he registered himself as a student in Law faculty. Karl chose to study law because of his father wanted Karl to become like him. However, he was interested in philosophy and literature more than law. He spent his time mostly on writing poetry, drinking and duelling. The university once imprisoned him for the loud drunken noise he made during one night. And he was also in debt.
             While at Bonn at the age of eighteen he got engaged to Jenny Von Westphalen, daughter Ludwig Von Westphalen. She was the friend of Marx's for a long time. The engagement was kept secret, meaning that they got engaged without asking permission form Jenny's parents. .
             After one academic year at Bonn, Heinrich Marx decided to have his son transferred to the University of Berlin. Also, he did not go to most lectures, and showed little interest in what was to be learned. Karl's reckless ways were not permitted at Berlin, a more conservative college without the troublesome ways of the other universities. While study there, Marx became part of a group known as the Young Hegelians.
