Over the years .
Amendments change to fit the opinions of those who are in office at the .
time. I don't believe that's what the authors of the Amendments intended to .
happen. Pornography was the way Larry Flynt chose to express himself, he .
was constantly being punished for his beliefs until brought to the Supreme .
Court. At the Supreme court is where Flynt found justice. His verdict stated .
things such as, everyone should have the freedom to express themselves no .
matter how tasteless it may be. Who is to chose what is acceptable and .
what is not.The freedom to speek ones mind is not only an aspect of .
individual liberty, but is essential to the quest for truth and vitality of .
society as a whole.
In an earlier case, The United States vs. Schwimmer, Justice Oliver .
Wendell Holmes Jr. of the Supreme court said: " If there is any principle of .
the Constitution that more imperatively calls for attachment than any other .
it is the principle of free thought-not free thought for those we agree with .
us but freedom for the thought that we hate." Holmes often stated his belief .
in free speech in a number of court decisions. Often the Amendment is .
thought to say, "Free speech for me-but not for thee." Which should not be .
true. People use the amendment in different ways acording to their view .
points on a certain subject.
The First Amendment protects the right of all U.S. citizens to express .
their thoughts. Through the years, however, officials have tried to balance .
the right to free speech with other rights protected by constitutional .
amendments. But by doing so they are also taking away are freedom which .
they so proudly gave to us. Continued efforts to balance these sometimes .
conflicting rights will keep the debate on the right to free speech for years .
to come.
Freedom Of Speech.
People in the United States of America take pride in living in a country .
that is known as the land of liberty. As citizens, we have certain rights as .
