For this topic I chose the book "A Painted House" by John Grisham. The setting is on a farm in the 1950's. The place is the state of Arkansas. The Chandler family has three generations that live on the farm and not all of them have the same "American Dream." For some of the family they want more from their life then what the current situation is providing for them. .
Eli and Ruth Chandler own the farm. Their names are the only ones on the deed of the house. The eldest generations of the Chandler family were happy with their lives that and the way that they had led them on the farm. The couple had been working for the owner of that land, and after thirty years of backbreaking work they were finally able to purchase a farmhouse along with the three acres that surrounded that farmhouse. From the Great Depression unto the 1950's Eli Chandler and his wife dreamed of having their own house, own property, and own farming business. The Chandler's dream became a reality. They were living their version of the "American Dream.".
Jesse and Sara were the second generation to the Chandler family. Jesse's father and mother were the ones that owned the farm outright. Jesse had a dream that one day he would own 40 acres of farmland debt free. Year after year he worked for his parents, but only having earning enough money to support his family, he never had enough money to buy the land that he desired. Sara had a dream that one day their family would stop the farming trade and lifestyle. She wanted to move into the city, and also give her son a better future, full of more choices then being stuck on the farm.
Luke Chandler was the youngest generation of the family. He always loved baseball and was excited about the idea of getting away from the farming lifestyle as he got older. The dream he had for his life was to play professional baseball. .
The aspect of this whole story that really was interesting to see was how the dreams change from one generation to the next.
