St. Augustine: The City of God

            
             Augustine, there have been many people and events that have helped in the establishment of philosophy and natural theology. He mentions many great thinkers before him that have contributed, such as Thales of Miletus along with his disciples Anaximander and Anaximenes who focused on astronomical calculations. These three philosophers were part of the Ionian School of philosophy, which is one of two schools the other being the Italian School. But the most renowned thinker in philosophy according to St. Augistine was Plato.
             A student of Socrates, Plato followed in the Socratic way of thought, but clearly surpassed all in knowledge mainly dealing with the will and nature of men. He traveled frequently in search of knowledge he had not come across in hopes to create the perfect philosophy.
             Accordingly there are two divisions of philosophy, active and contemplative. The first of these two divisions deals with the conduct of life and the second with the natural cause of life. Plato combined both of these then divided the new whole into three parts: first moral philosophy, which pertains to action, second, natural philosophy, which is connected to contemplation and third, rational philosophy, which distinguishes from truth and error. (p.117) Through Plato his followers have deciphered three truths about God: in Him is found the cause of all being, the reason of all thinking, the rule of all living. (p.117) .
             St. Augustine felt that the Platonic philosophers were most accurate in their depiction that God could not have been produced by any existing thing, but He Himself is the maker of all things. (p.119) They believed that since the mind is the decipherer of beauty that it is true that there must me some kind of superior form in the mind. The problem is that the mind is not unchangeable, therefore different degrees of beauty in both the mind and body exist. So they gathered there must be some unchangeable reality which would be considered the ultimate.
