Baseball

" In their opinion, the athletes already have many advantages in their respective universities. For instance, almost 90 percent of the athletes are on some sort of athletic scholarship. Right there this saves the athletes and the parents of the athletes close to one hundred thousand dollars over a four-year period depending on the scholarship. The NCAA feels that the athletes do not realize the advantages they are receiving because they are so blind-sided by the money they could possibly receive by becoming a professional athlete. The NCAA states that they are "a private, nonprofit, volunteer, membership-driven Association of more than 900 colleges and universities of every kind, along with more than 300 conferences, affiliated organizations and corresponding individuals and institutions" (NCAA). Thus showing that the NCAA gains no advantage with the revenue these players bring in, because it all goes to the universities. The NCAA feels that they are like any other business because they are just selling their product, the athletes. The NCAA states that their only purpose, or main purpose, is " to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body" (NCAA). The NCAA claims that they are only concerned with what is better for the athletes, and gain no advantage for themselves in any way.
The Kansas City Star, a locally based paper to the NCAA, came out with a series of accusations about the NCAA and money issues. Their report showed the ways in which the NCAA basically "scandals" money from athletes and universities. "Money is the reason top NCAA officials enjoy benefits that stretch the limits of tax law and their own ethics rules" (Kansas City Star, 2). This means that the NCAA is breaking its own rules of how money should be spent and given out. They believe that the money should go to the institutions to improve the quality of education and athletic support.
