Despite the need for food and warmth, the pigs take advantage of Boxer and the other animals by making them take on hard labor to build the windmill, which will eventually earn the pigs more money and thus increase their power. The pigs' decision that Snowball is responsible for the windmill's first collapse represents the psychological manipulation the pigs are capable of. It prevents the other animals from doubting the pigs' abilities and unites them against an imaginary enemy. The ultimate conversion of the windmill to commercial use is one more sign of the pigs' betrayal of their fellow animals. From a symbolic point of view, the windmill represents the enormous transformation projects undertook in Soviet Russia after the Russian Revolution.
B. Historically, fables or fairy tales have allowed writers to criticize individuals without putting their jobs at stake as well as allowed people to face the problems with their society. The language of a fable comes across as gentle, inviting, and unassuming, because it reminds us of when we were young. It allows us to be more welcoming to criticism, which is exactly how Orwell gets his points across. Because fables contain animals with problems rather than people, Orwell uses characterization to add an element of consideration to his arguments that one would not normally have. By telling the story from the point of view of the animals, Orwell draws us in and allows us to identify with the working class that he portrays, while teaching us history. Thus, a fable allows him to appeal more intensely to emotion than a political essay might enable him to do. Orwell uses his characters not only to portray leaders form the Russian revolution, but to also emphasize his main point of the novel. We cannot eliminate government corruption by electing individuals to roles of power because it is power itself that corrupts.
