HR Interview

The manager that I interviewed is Dave Hansen. He is in his early thirties and has worked at this company for about 5 years. I first had contacted Dave by phone and we had talked a few times trying to set up an interview, which we finally did, but not without some difficulty due to his busy schedule as well as mine. Throughout this whole time of the setup process Dave was very helpful and returned calls which was appreciated very much. This gave me a sense that he really felt it was appropriate to treat people right, which led me to wonder if most HR managers are like this. I would have to imagine that HR managers would have to enjoy working with people and therefore the people who become HR managers tend to be more people friendly. .
I asked Dave a series of questions that I had prepared for the interview and just before the interview I was somewhat nervous. I told myself that I was not ready to do this interview, and that I knew nothing about doing an interview. It was just at this time when I remembered the 80/20 rule that we went over in class. For some reason once that had came to mind I felt as confident as I could possibly be. I tried to talk 20% and let him talk 80% of the time. .
As the interview started I began to ask the basic questions that I felt would be good icebreakers to the interview. All the "how long have you worked here?" and the, "do you enjoy your job?" were asked early in the interview and then I moved on to the more in depth questions. It was at this point in the interview that I got the best understanding of the role that a HR manager has in a company. Dave had mentioned the duties that he felt were important for a manager to be able to do. The most surprising of these duties was the role that Dave feels he plays in the strategic end of the business. He says that this has shifted over the past few years in HR. Dave said that in the past HR never played a key role in the planning process of the employees or the decision making of company standards and work expectations.
