Interpersonal Communication


The studies show that lies are not commonly used for weapons but as defenses. The studies also show that liars are usually substantially more satisfied with the lie than with themselves.(Hample 1980) Hample states that deception is a power balancing-strategy, "a means of social or economic defense in a disadvantage situation"(Hample). His estimations show that people lie twice a day. Hample also says peoples contentions that most lies are responsive rather than initiating, often automatic and repeated, and successful answers to challenges.(Hample).
             Taking together, the authors findings about the nature and functions of interpersonal deception, she saw that they where highlighting the need for further research.(Lippard) .
             She came up with three purposes for her research: .
             1) To test and refine Camdens Reward Category System on a larger subject population and on a larger data pool which includes all forms of interpersonal deception that the subject may engage in over the period of the study.
             2) To expand the category system to include recipient categories.
             3) To discover if situational exigencies exist which appear to demand a predictable deceitful response, by examining the relationship between motivation and recipient categories. .
             The procedures were to use voluntary undergraduate communication students in the study. They were to include every misrepresentation of the truth that occurred. This included lies, half-truths, exaggerations, and withholding information, cheating, stealing and hiding behavior. Every time they encounter one of these deceptions occurred they where asked to fill out a form. The form asked for the recipients age, gender, it asked to describe every aspect of the act.
             The forms where then analyzed for three different aspects. The type of deception, the recipient of deception, and the primary motivation for the deception. There where seventy-four subjects and 940 instances of deception that where recorded.
