How Teachers Choose Materials

In my experience as a student teacher there have been many classes and topics in which I would have preferred material that was fulfilling, valuable and that would provide me with a different outlook on my teaching career. How many times have I questioned my self on what is the real meaning of a "good teacher"? I have been endlessly searching for illumination so as to give my pathway to teaching a profound transformation. In my mind the picture of being a teacher was that of a person standing in front of the classroom depositing information through a monologue (one-way communication). Finally, -in the last two years of my career- my teachers have chosen the type of materials that have helped me find peace and contentment. Those materials have shed a light on what I"m considering to use as my teaching philosophy. From this point on I will always consider the following important, content in materials chosen by teachers provides the necessary conditions for students to be active participants not only in classroom settings but also in their societal context.
The content in materials must be meaningful so as to provide students with awareness that their needs have been met. The content in materials should not only be chosen according to the level of proficiency the student has or what they are able to understand but also according to their needs, wants, and desires. Teachers should share meaningful materials that will empower students and that will broaden their view on how they perceived the world. Defining meaningful material as material that is relevant to the students societal, experiential and daily life context. Students learning process will be affected if what they read in class is tangible to their senses and their emotions. Teachers who take the time to analyze and prepare materials in order to meet the needs of their students will also become aware on the fact that students are motivated.
