Organizational Behaviour

George would respond to the deputy ministers and leave Stanley's phone calls unanswered. The mum effect is also evident in this company. George did not break the news to Stanley that he had hired a new president for the company knowing that this would be unfavourable news to him. This left Stanley in the dark contributed to the fact of him not being aware of important information. Both mum and status effect were evident partly due to the fact that they had conflicting roles. Both George and Stanley had different perspectives of what needed to be done and how it was going to be done. The communication problem could have been solved if George had better leadership and communication skills to manage his business and his employees. George should have made the effort to communicate exactly what he wanted to and deal with situations as they arose. George should have also provided effective feedback and let Stanley know what was required of him and what was going on in the organization instead of him assuming that he had everything under control. Furthermore, George should have communicated exactly what he meant and not having to "beat around the bush" assuming things were understood. Had they taken these effective approaches it would have not resulted in sleepless, stressful nights for Stanley and his motivational level declining.
The motivational level in Stanley's situation was high at one point when he had a high degree of autonomy and was involved in challenging projects in exotic locations. Also since the business was under his control it met his need for power and met his self actualization needs according to Maslow's theory. He felt as if he was making a difference in the business and was very proud of his accomplishments. Unfortunately, due to the lack of communication and the structure of the organization, he became more de-motivated. The lack of communication made him feel as if he was just a number and not important due to the fact that he was not being informed about the changes in the management.
