Marriage Is A Private Affair

And she doesn't believe that Nnaemeka's father will disapprove. But Nnaemeka knows it won't be easy: "They are most unhappy if the engagement is not arranged by them. In our case it's worse- you are not even an Ibo- (204). Perhaps Nnaemeka was hoping that his father would take his sons happiness over the people's happiness.
When Nnaemeka's father hears about the news he is very disappointed. His response to that is "Whoever put this idea into your head might as well have cut your throat. It is Satan's work."" (206). He is convinced that Nnaemeka has to follow the old tradition because that's what he is, an Ibo. Nnaemeka tries to fight and tells him that marriage is different nowadays, but his father doesn't want to hear it. He is so caught up in the whole tradition that he tells Nnaemeka he doesn't want anything to do with him or Nene if they get married. Okeke ( Nnaemeka's father) would have nothing to do with them for almost a decade. In some ways it is understandable why his father acted as he did. It is very hard to accept something new for someone who grew up knowing nothing else but what his culture taught and showed him. But as the world evolves people can be molded into accepting the new ways of life and just like that when Nnaemeka's father learned that he was a grandfather he realized that he was keeping himself from happiness, "he knew he was now fighting a losing battle- (208). He wasn't fighting them; he was fighting himself in not sharing the love and life of his son and his family. He realized that they were happy even if he chose not to be a part of them because they had eachother. But Okeke had no one left to share his life with. So as they were getting older, he was just getting sadder and lonelier. .
I myself can relate to this story. I grew up in a place where religion has played an important role, even to this day, and it will most likely stay as it always was.
