Smoking Around Children

Smoking around children can also affect the way they taste or smell things because smoking or being around smoke destroys or minimizes the sensory organs and taste buds. Children whom live with smokers are twice as likely to develop lung cancer as a child whom does not live with a smoker. Unborn children are exposed to the cigarette smoke through the mother smoking and the effects are just as harmful.
             Smoking while one is pregnant can cause the unborn child problems before the child is able to take its first breath on its own. Smoking can cause low birth weight and complications during pregnancy. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is another risk for an unborn child after birth (http://www.islamset.com/healnews/smoking/INGCAT/clive_bates.htm ). Children born to mothers who smoke are more likely to be born with respiratory illnesses. Children may also have under developed lungs at the time of birth. Unborn children are at a high risk of developing birth defects while in the womb and the risk of premature labor is also higher.
             One can avoid smoking around children by doing just a few simple things. Smoking outdoors and away from the area where children are playing is one of the simplest ways to avoid exposing children to the poisonous chemicals of tobacco smoke. Refraining from smoking in vehicles is another way to avoid exposure especially while children are present. Designating a particular area where children do not frequent or play can also be a way to avoid the harmful exposure to toxins. Not smoking in areas where children spend most of their time playing can also avoid the exposure. Being careful to find out whether or not parents of other children smoke is another way to limited the risk of being exposed to second-hand smoke. However, the best way to avoid exposing children to cigarette smoke is for parents to quit smoking and to make sure children are not around someone that does smoke.
